I visited Dr. Ashis Paul at Broad Street Clinic, 2210 Broad Street, Regina, SK, S4P 4V6, on 19th Dec 2023 to get medical note. The doctor started acting as a racist as he came in and he started asking me questions whether I speak Bengali language and whether I am from Bengal state of India. He had a laughing weird smile also on his face and was passing on comments at the back saying “this is how you are killing me”.

He started arguing to prescribe me medicines for depression. I said according to the medical psychologist, I have been advised not to take any medicines, but to follow the routine techniques and practices he has given, and that I just need a medical note stating one month of rest as advised by the psychologist. But he started arguing that he’s much more experienced and know more. I said I cannot take medicines until prescribed so by the psychologist.

He then started behaving more rude arguing on the fee charged for issuing medical note. He said, “I would charge you $30 for the medical note”. I asked why the fee was just $20 previously when I got the medical note from him just 2-3 months ago. He started arguing saying, “I am the owner, I can change the fee anytime. This time you must pay $30 and next time, it can be $50. I am the owner and can change the medical fee anytime”. He took the medical note away from him saying that he will not give the medical note unless paid $30 fee.

He’s a racist and an insane person as he intentionally behaved so weird. He know I came for medical note as suffering from mental stress and health issues, but he still argued with me again and again to stress me more.

The lady assistants in the clinic were also laughing weirdly and one of them also argued with me when trying to give me the receipt.

After the ill-treatment received from the clinic, I had issues finding my way to home as this distressed me more when I was already going through mental stress.

A medical practitioner should, in no way treat anyone coming to the clinic like this which is not only unprofessional but inhumane as well. Especially, when a patient visits the clinic, he/she is asking for remedies from the doctor and should not be ill-treated like this. He should speak kindly and with empathy rather than being rude and discriminatory.

The doctor should not discriminate with the patients based on race which is unfair and insane. The doctor should be given training on how to deal with others from different communities. Also, he should not charge just anything based on his own perception. The charge for medical note should be standard. It should not change anytime like this.
